2026 Engineering Design Challenge

Home workout equipment can quickly become scattered throughout the house, creating clutter, taking up space, and making it difficult to keep everything organized. As more people exercise at home, having a dedicated place to store fitness essentials helps keep spaces clean, coordinated, and easy to use.

Your challenge is to design a practical all-in-one storage solution that keeps workout equipment and snacks neatly organized while remaining functional for everyday use.

What your storage design must hold

Weights

Your design must include storage for at least two (2) of the following:

  • Dumbbells

  • Weight lifting plates

  • Ankle weights

  • Kettlebells

  • Medicine/weighted balls

  • Barbell

Other Equipment

Your design must include storage for all of the following:

  • Yoga mat

  • Jump rope

  • Resistance bands

  • Foam roller

Workout Snacks

Your design must include dedicated storage compartments for gym snacks.

Examples:

  • Protein bars

  • Protein powder

  • Energy/electrolyte drinks

Design Constraints

  • The storage unit must be a single-piece design. In other words, it should be manufactured as one unit.

Required Design Information

Competitors must include the following in their submission:

  • At least three (3) different materials used in the design

  • Overall dimensions (length, width, and height)

  • The selected weights (minimum of two from the list)

Specifications

  • Competitors are not required to specify the weight of any gym equipment (e.g. 5 lb, 10 lb, 20 lb, etc.)

  • Competitors may, but not required to, specify the quantity of the chosen equipment (e.g. Dumbbells x5, Kettlebells x2, Foam roller x1, etc.)
